New boutique firm aims to transform the practice of law

John Rushing, a trial lawyer, and Ryan McCarl, a UCLA law instructor and artificial intelligence researcher, have opened a new Los Angeles-based law firm: Rushing McCarl. Rushing McCarl is focused on serving the needs of innovators, entrepreneurs, and technology companies in California. The firm provides elite legal services through an agile, client-centered model that transforms the practice of law.

Rushing McCarl believes that traditional legal practice is characterized by unpredictable pricing, excessive overhead, lack of transparency, and one-size-fits-all methods. The firm plans to replace that model with something better: elegant, cost-effective solutions tailored to each client’s circumstances.

“Ryan and I looked at the legal landscape and realized that there is a need for a new type of law firm,” Rushing said. “We wanted to harness the power of technology to create virtual workflows and disrupt traditional legal practices while passing the benefit to our clients.”

Rushing McCarl also believes that communication and persuasion are the essence of great lawyering. Rushing has years of experience working as an actor and producer as well as a trial lawyer, and McCarl is an experienced litigator and writer who created an Advanced Legal Writing course at UCLA Law. Rushing plans to take the lead in the firm’s oral advocacy while McCarl takes the lead in written advocacy.

“If you want your firm to be as forward-thinking as you are, call us,” McCarl said.
